StarPilot Installation Guide
How to install StarPilot on your comma 3 or comma 3X. One install URL works for all vehicles: .
Comma Devices
- comma 3X — fully supported, recommended
- comma 3 (C3) — supported
- comma 4 — not yet (interim: firestar5683/SunnyPedalUpdate)
Supported Vehicles
- Chevrolet Bolt EV (2017–23, with LKAS)
- Chevrolet Bolt EUV (no SuperCruise)
- Chevrolet Volt (with ASCM/SDGM setup)
- Other GM ASCM/SDGM cars (ask in Discord)
- SuperCruise-equipped vehicles
Install Methods
Use the standard installer for normal setup. The second tab covers recovery and switching from another fork.
Power off your car
Engine or EV system fully off. Plug your comma device into the windshield mount if it isn't already.
Connect to WiFi
On first boot, the comma asks for a WiFi connection. If you don't have WiFi at your car, bring it inside and power it via USB-C near your router.
Select Custom Software
Once connected to WiFi, the device shows a software prompt. Tap 'Custom Software' to enter a fork URL.
Enter the install URL
Type and confirm. The StarPilot installer will load with three options.
Choose Install (recommended for most)
Tap "Install" to install the main StarPilot branch. This is correct for almost everyone — Bolt, Volt, and other GM cars.
Wait for download and install
StarPilot downloads and installs. Takes a few minutes. Don't interrupt power during this step.
Complete setup and verify fingerprint
After install, go through the setup screens. Verify your vehicle fingerprint in Vehicle Controls — especially important for Bolt owners. Each Bolt model year has its own lateral tuning profile.
Configure essential settings
Follow the Essential Settings: turn off Human Like Following and Acceleration. For radar-less / non-ACC Bolts, enable CEM with 'Slower Lead' and 'Stopped Lead' turned on. Set 'openpilot Wants to Stop In' to 8 seconds.
Available Branches
All branches use and are chosen inside the installer.
Recommended for daily use — Bolt, Volt, all GM cars.
Advanced users and testers only.
Recovery option — stuck on boot logo after switching from FrogPilot or old branch.
Each Bolt model year has its own lateral tuning profile. The 2017 Bolt supports 4.5 Nm of steering torque — higher than other years. Auto fingerprint usually selects the correct profile, but if steering behavior looks wrong after install, manually verify your fingerprint in Vehicle Controls. Do not select the 2017 fingerprint on other model years.
22-23 Bolts: Sport mode decreases available steering torque — keep it in normal mode while using openpilot.
Bolt Hardware Setup
Hardware needed depends on whether your Bolt has factory ACC. Harnesses available from BearTechWorkshop (tinybear) — recommended source. Comma Power cable is not needed for GM vehicles.
- comma 3X (recommended)
- GM Harness + Harness Box (from BearTechWorkshop / tinybear)
- Comma Pedal — strongly recommended
Without a pedal, openpilot uses 'Redneck ACC' (CC Long) to control speed — functional but limited. With a pedal: full throttle, regen braking (L mode), and stop-and-go support.
- comma 3X (recommended)
- GM Harness + Harness Box
- Comma Pedal — optional (adds stop-and-go and regen; tradeoff: loses friction brakes)
ACC Bolts allow openpilot to use friction brakes and have auto resume from stop via the ACC system. Adding a pedal switches to regen-only braking mode.
Volt Hardware Setup
Volt setup is more complex than Bolt — configuration depends on model year and whether your car has factory ACC. SASCM overrides the factory ACC and gives openpilot full longitudinal control.
- comma 3X
- ASCM Harness Plus + Harness Box
- SASCM (enables openpilot longitudinal control)
- OBD-C Cable — 15 ft
- Comma Pedal (optional — adds stop-and-go for 2018+)
- comma 3X
- SDGM Harness + Harness Box
- SASCM
- OBD-C Cable — 10 ft
- Comma Pedal (optional — adds stop-and-go)
- comma 3X
- OBD-II Harness (or GM Harness if you have stock LKAS)
- Firmware flash for ACC (recommended — contact pinballben in Discord)
- or: Comma Pedal (untested on Volt, limited to L-mode regen)
