Kia StingerCompatibility & setup

Add comma to your Kia Stinger

Compatible forks can control steering, gas and brakes on listed Stingers. Gas/brake control is optional alpha software; standard openpilot leaves speed to Kia’s cruise control.

Yes, forks can control the Stinger’s gas and brakes.

sunnypilot, BluePilot, StarPilot and FrogPilot offer optional alpha speed control for the listed Stinger years. Check the fork’s device support; FrogPilot’s reviewed branch covers comma 3X and comma 3. dragonpilot also has it, with a build/channel caveat.

Experimental Mode alone is not enough. Enable alpha speed control first. The standard Stinger radar-disabling path loses factory automatic emergency braking (AEB). Stay ready to steer or brake.

How to enable it in sunnypilot

Choose your year

Two Stinger setups are listed

What about a 2021 Stinger? Comma does not list 2021 in either group. We have not verified it; do not choose a neighboring year as a match.

Official vehicle page and source code checked October 4, 2026 UTC. Confirm your car’s equipment and market with comma before buying.

Two separate settings

How to enable gas and brake control in sunnypilot

These steps cover the reviewed sunnypilot releases for comma four and comma 3X on the listed Stingers. First install the correct version using the sunnypilot installation guide.

  1. Park and disengage all assistance. Let sunnypilot recognize your Stinger. The alpha setting cannot be changed while assistance is engaged. Braking may leave sunnypilot’s independent steering active, so check that steering assistance is off too.
  2. Enable the alpha gas/brake setting. On comma four, open settings → developer → alpha longitudinal. On comma 3X, open Settings → Developer → sunnypilot Longitudinal Control (Alpha). Read the braking-protection warning before confirming. This switches speed control from Kia’s cruise system to sunnypilot.
  3. Wait for the software restart. Changing alpha control requests a restart of the driving software if the car is powered on. Stay parked and let that finish before checking the next setting.
  4. Choose Experimental Mode if you want model-based speed planning. Open Settings → Toggles → Experimental Mode (lowercase labels on comma four) and read any confirmation. sunnypilot recommends it with alpha control. It is a separate setting for model-based speed planning. Alpha control already enables software gas and brakes.

If alpha control is missing, or Experimental Mode stays unavailable after the restart, check the recognized car, installed branch and device support. Do not force the setting or select a different model year. Neither switch guarantees stops for lights or signs.

Source-checked October 4, 2026 on release-mici (comma four) and release-tizi (comma 3X); not a physical-device or road test. The alpha warning concerns loss of factory braking protection even when Experimental Mode is off.

Two separate jobs

Steering versus gas and brakes

Steering: staying in your lane

Lateral control means steering. openpilot helps keep the Stinger centered in its lane. Comma lists steering at all speeds for both year groups. Tight curves and other situations can still need your help.

Speed: gas and brakes

Longitudinal control means speed control. This covers acceleration and braking. In standard openpilot, Kia’s Smart Cruise Control sets the pace and follows the car ahead. openpilot steers alongside it.

Comma lists automatic resume from a stop for both groups. That does not mean the driving model controls the pedals. The normal setup can send a resume request to Kia’s cruise system.

Keep using the car’s cruise controls for speed and following distance. Remain ready to take over; lane centering does not make the car self-driving.

Optional test software

Can comma control the Stinger’s gas and brakes?

Comma lists alpha openpilot speed control for both Stinger groups. In official openpilot, its setting is limited to non-release software such as nightly-dev. It is not part of the standard-release setup.

Alpha control changes factory braking protection

The reviewed official Stinger code disables the factory radar’s control messages when alpha speed control takes over. This path loses factory automatic emergency braking (AEB). Do not treat openpilot braking as a replacement for AEB.

Experimental Mode needs openpilot to control gas and brakes. It is unavailable on the Stinger in standard openpilot while factory cruise owns speed. A larger model or Chestnut does not change that connection.

Alpha speed control and Experimental Mode are separate settings. The first changes who controls speed; the second changes the driving plan. Neither promises reliable stops for lights or signs.

Check each fork’s exact Stinger support

The inspected sunnypilot, FrogPilot, StarPilot and BluePilot releases expose optional alpha speed control for these Stingers. Factory SCC remains the default. FrogPilot’s reviewed branch covers comma 3 and comma 3X; do not assume comma four support.

dragonpilot’s 0.11.1 code also has optional alpha control, but availability depends on the installed build and channel. Check its source notes on your year-specific page.

The year-specific pages show which reviewed project sources list your Stinger, alongside their branch, device and verification date. Open each software row before choosing an installer.

A car-table listing does not prove that a fork’s gas and brake settings work like official openpilot. Release settings and hardware requirements can differ. A listing is a source listing, not a road test.

Before your first drive

Match the car, parts and software

  1. Confirm the year and cruise equipment

Use the exact-year page above. For 2018–2020, verify factory Smart Cruise Control. Ask comma about any uncertain equipment, market differences or modifications.

  2. Choose the correct connection kit

2018–2020 uses Hyundai C; 2022–2023 uses Hyundai K. Select the exact Stinger in comma’s shop and confirm the complete device, harness, power, cable and mount kit.

    Check comma’s current vehicle selector
  3. Follow the supported installation path

Use comma’s setup instructions or the chosen fork’s device-specific guide. Complete training and calibration. Keep cables clear of airbags and vehicle controls.

    Device and software setup
  4. Learn the normal controls first

Start with the standard setup and learn when assistance engages and disengages. Check alerts and stay ready to steer or brake. Do not enable alpha speed control without understanding the AEB change.

Sources and limits

We checked comma’s live vehicle list, both Stinger definitions, steering and cruise-control code, and the official release restrictions. This is a source review; we did not test a Stinger on the road.
