Requires Smart Cruise Control (SCC). Here is who controls what.
Yes, forks can control the Stinger’s gas and brakes.
sunnypilot, BluePilot, StarPilot and FrogPilot offer optional alpha speed control for the listed Stinger years. Check the fork’s device support; FrogPilot’s reviewed branch covers comma 3X and comma 3. dragonpilot also has it, with a build/channel caveat.
Experimental Mode alone is not enough. Enable alpha speed control first. The standard Stinger radar-disabling path loses factory automatic emergency braking (AEB). Stay ready to steer or brake.
Helps keep you centered in your lane. Stay ready to steer.
Gas and brakes in standard openpilot
Your car’s cruise control handles gas and brakes
The normal setup keeps your car’s own speed and distance control. Test software differs; see the details below.
Your part
Watch the road. Stay ready to take over.
You remain responsible for steering and braking whenever needed.
Two separate settings
How to enable gas and brake control in sunnypilot
These steps cover the reviewed sunnypilot releases for comma four and comma 3X on the listed Stingers. First install the correct version using the sunnypilot installation guide.
Park and disengage all assistance. Let sunnypilot recognize your Stinger. The alpha setting cannot be changed while assistance is engaged. Braking may leave sunnypilot’s independent steering active, so check that steering assistance is off too.
Enable the alpha gas/brake setting. On comma four, open settings → developer → alpha longitudinal. On comma 3X, open Settings → Developer → sunnypilot Longitudinal Control (Alpha). Read the braking-protection warning before confirming. This switches speed control from Kia’s cruise system to sunnypilot.
Wait for the software restart. Changing alpha control requests a restart of the driving software if the car is powered on. Stay parked and let that finish before checking the next setting.
Choose Experimental Mode if you want model-based speed planning. Open Settings → Toggles → Experimental Mode (lowercase labels on comma four) and read any confirmation. sunnypilot recommends it with alpha control. It is a separate setting for model-based speed planning. Alpha control already enables software gas and brakes.
If alpha control is missing, or Experimental Mode stays unavailable after the restart, check the recognized car, installed branch and device support. Do not force the setting or select a different model year. Neither switch guarantees stops for lights or signs.
Source-checked October 4, 2026 on release-mici (comma four) and release-tizi (comma 3X); not a physical-device or road test. The alpha warning concerns loss of factory braking protection even when Experimental Mode is off.
Lateral control means steering. Longitudinal control means acceleration and braking. In standard openpilot, comma steers while Kia’s Smart Cruise Control handles speed.
Official alpha speed control is a non-release option. The reviewed Stinger path disables factory radar control and loses automatic emergency braking (AEB).
2021 is not listed by comma and is not verified here. The 2018–2020 and 2022–2023 groups use different harnesses.
You still get openpilot’s lane-centering assistance, even with factory cruise controlling gas and brakes. For highway driving, that can be the upgrade you want.
No routine steering-wheel reminders
openpilot uses a driver-facing camera to check your attention instead of asking for regular nudges of the wheel. Attention alerts and requests to take over still matter: keep watching the road and be ready to steer or brake.
Built to help on long drives
comma says openpilot can drive for hours without intervention. That describes a possibility, not a promise for this car or your route. Curves, weather, road conditions, and your car’s steering limits can require your help at any time.

How standard openpilot drives
In Chill Mode
In the standard release, openpilot steers while the car's factory adaptive cruise controls gas and brakes. Use the car's normal cruise controls for speed and following distance.
Experimental Mode: Non-release software only
The stable release cannot use Experimental Mode on this car. Comma lists alpha openpilot gas and brake control, but its toggle is limited to non-release branches such as nightly-dev. Fork behavior is separate and must be checked with that project.
More detail: driving models and radar
A bigger model does not change control access
Chestnut gives comma four more computing power for larger driving models. The connection to the car still decides whether openpilot can send steering, gas, and brake commands. What Chestnut changes
Radar and control are different things
A car may use radar, cameras, or both to see traffic. That is separate from who sends gas and brake commands. The official row does not name the sensor for this car, so CommaGuide does not guess.

This page describes stock openpilot capability from one exact official table row. It does not prove that a community fork supports this configuration.
Note 1: openpilot Longitudinal Control (Alpha) is available behind a toggle; the toggle is only available in non-release branches such as `nightly-dev`.
