Car Unrecognized? Pair comma connect and send your car's firmware
Car Unrecognized means openpilot did not match your car's firmware, so it records but does not drive. One drive and one upload usually fix it.
Your car must be on the supported list. This guide adds a missing firmware version to a supported car. It cannot add an unsupported car.
Why it happens
openpilot reads the firmware versions of your car's modules to work out the model and trim. A version it has never seen, often after a dealer update, means no match.

Try the nightly-dev build first
Reset the device, choose Custom Software, and enter installer.comma.ai/commaai/nightly-dev. Newer firmware often lands there first.
Drive once and watch the screen
If the car is now recognised, you are done. The next stable release will usually include your firmware too.
Still unrecognised? Send your firmware
Follow the pairing and firmware steps below. It takes one drive, one upload, and a few minutes on a laptop.

Pair comma connect and send your firmware
You need an official comma device and the account you pair with. The wiki page has every file name and an example; here is the shape.
Open connect.comma.ai on your phone
Sign in with Google, Apple, or GitHub. Always use the same account afterwards, or your device will not appear.
Open comma connectTap add new device and scan the code
On a comma 3X, tap Pair device on the home screen. On a comma four, open pair with comma connect in settings.
Take a short drive, then park on Wi-Fi
Drive around the block so the device records your car's firmware. Back home, let it upload on Wi-Fi.
Find carFw in the drive's log
Open useradmin.comma.ai with the same account, pick the newest drive, segment 0, then carParams, and search for carFw.
Open useradminAdd the versions and ask for a merge
Copy each firmware line into the car's file on the openpilot project page, following the wiki. Merges usually land within a day or two.

After you send it
You can test your own change straight away, then go back to the normal release once it is merged.
What to expect
- Install your own branch with installer.comma.ai and your GitHub name to test.
- Ask in your car make's channel on discord.comma.ai if you get stuck.
- Merged changes ship in the next openpilot release.
- Switch back to the stable release once your car is recognised there.

Questions people ask
Why does my supported car say Car Unrecognized?
openpilot identifies a car by the firmware versions in its modules. A newer version, often after a dealer update, is not on the list yet.
Is dashcam mode dangerous?
No. The device only records. Your car's own cruise control and lane assist keep working exactly as before.
Do I have to pair comma connect?
Not to drive; comma four works without an account. You need it, or SSH, to read the firmware for this fix.
Is Check Connections the same problem?
No. Check Connections means a cable or harness problem. Reseat the harness, the OBD-C cable, and the comma power first.
What if carFw is empty?
The device did not talk to the car. Check the harness cable to comma power, flip the OBD-C cable, then drive again.
Is there a reward for adding a car?
comma pays bounties for car ports, including $250 for a new model. Adding firmware for an existing model is unpaid but quick.
