Technical notes and limitations
Chestnut launched on August 12, 2026 as a USB-to-PCIe compute upgrade for comma four; the ready-to-drive kit includes an AMD Radeon RX 9060 8GB.
The dedicated openpilot 0.11.2 Chestnut release channel runs a larger driving model on an external AMD GPU while image warping and driver monitoring remain on Qualcomm.
First-party Chestnut sources use different precision for the first model: the launch post says 1B parameters, while the release notes specify 880M.
comma describes the first Chestnut-class driving model as 30 times larger by parameter count and 100 times larger by FLOPs than the latest on-device model at launch.
comma four is the current comma device sold for official openpilot use.
comma four is one-fifth the size of comma 3X while retaining its compute, sensor suite, and functionality; current product materials list 128GB storage, a Snapdragon 845 MAX, three camera views, high-precision GPS, and USB 3.1 Gen 2.
The current openpilot documentation lists release-mici as the comma four prebuilt release branch.
The external GPU path runs a navigation model on the GPU.
