A camera checks the person driving
The driver-facing model processes camera images on the comma device. That gives the software information about the driver, instead of using repeated wheel movements as its main attention check.
No wheel nags does not mean no alerts
Distraction, a camera problem, a vehicle fault, or a control limit can still produce an alert or disengagement. A sharp bend is only one possible reason to take over. Intervene as needed without waiting for a prompt.
The car still determines the steering
Camera-based attention checks do not increase a car’s available steering force. Read the exact vehicle’s steering limits, including low-speed operation, before expecting the same experience as a video filmed in another car.
Some factory systems already do this
Super Cruise and BlueCruise already offer supervised hands-free driving on eligible roads. Newer ProPILOT and certain Subaru configurations do too. Compare the system and generation in your actual car, not just the manufacturer name.

Will it ever ask me to take the wheel?
Yes. openpilot can request a takeover and can disengage for several reasons. It does not promise to warn before every situation that needs your steering or braking.
Does a driver-monitoring camera make every car compatible?
No. Attention monitoring and vehicle control are separate parts of the system. Check the exact car listing first.
