The road-facing cameras supply images to the driving model. The released code loads a model and processes camera frames on the driving hardware. The model produces predictions used by the rest of openpilot.
Turn predictions into driving help
Software turns those predictions into steering assistance and, where supported, speed control. The car integration and its control limits are part of the system too. A clever model does not give every car the same steering or braking capabilities.
Watch the driver, too
A separate model processes the driver-facing camera. That is how comma checks attention without asking for periodic steering-wheel nudges as proof that you are there. It can still alert you to distraction or ask for a takeover.
Open source means you can look inside
openpilot’s code is available to inspect and contribute to. You do not need to train a model or write code for a standard installation. Community versions are a separate choice once you understand the basics.
