AI driving, explained

A smarter drive. In the car you already own.

You can add AI driving assistance to a compatible car with a comma device and openpilot. It helps the car steer and, on supported configurations, manage speed and following distance. You supervise the drive; this is not an autonomous-car conversion.

What people mean by “adding self-driving”

Picture your usual highway commute: staying centered through bends, following traffic, making small speed adjustments. Those are the everyday jobs comma can help with. The appeal is getting more driving help from a car you already like.

One device. Two things to understand.

comma is the windshield-mounted hardware. openpilot is the open-source software it runs. The device brings cameras and computing; a car-specific harness connects it to the vehicle’s existing electronic controls.

Can you make any car self-drive?

The exact car matters. A Toyota badge, a recent model year, or existing cruise control is not enough. Look up your model, year and required equipment, then check the steering and speed-control notes. Some supported cars keep their factory adaptive cruise control.

Your path from curious to installed

Check the car first. Choose the device and listed harness. Follow the official hardware installation while parked, then the software guide and calibration instructions. Our setup pages walk through each part without requiring you to become a programmer.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Can I add this to a gas car?

Yes, specific gasoline cars are supported, alongside specific hybrids and EVs. The exact compatibility listing matters more than the fuel type.

Will it drive me from my driveway to a destination?

That is not what standard openpilot promises. Start with its lane-centering and adaptive-cruise role, and check the exact software before expecting intersection or navigation behavior.

Car checked? Ready to choose?
