comma can reduce pedal work on supported cars, including gas cars. With the appropriate configuration, you can press the accelerator without disengaging openpilot. But lifting your foot is not a command to stop like EV one-pedal driving.
The useful part of the idea
Imagine following slower highway traffic: the active cruise system manages the gap, you briefly add acceleration, then let the system resume its usual speed-control job. Whether this is available, and whether openpilot or the factory system controls speed, depends on the car and configuration.
Why lifting off does not always slow you down
Adaptive cruise works toward a set speed and following distance. If the road ahead is clear, releasing the accelerator may let it maintain speed or accelerate toward that setting. It does not necessarily brake just because your foot comes up.
What the accelerator setting changes
The inspected comma four release includes a “Disengage on Accelerator Pedal” setting. Its code checks that setting before treating a new accelerator press as a disengagement event. Brake input while moving disengages; other alerts and faults can also end assistance. This is not a promise that assistance stays on until you brake.
Three features that sound alike
EV one-pedal driving links accelerator release to deceleration. Accelerator override lets you add acceleration while an assistance system remains engaged. Independent steering assistance can let you drive with the pedals while software handles steering. A fork may offer a particular behavior, but the names are not interchangeable.
What to check before trying it
Find the exact car’s speed-control owner and low-speed limits, then the software’s pedal behavior. Read the maintained controls guide. Brake whenever necessary; neither traffic detection nor automatic slowing guarantees a stop for every obstacle, signal, or situation.

Does this add regenerative braking to a gas car?
No. Installing comma does not add an EV motor or regenerative-braking hardware. The useful benefit here is reduced pedal work through supported driving assistance.
Will AI brake whenever I need it?
Do not assume that. Speed assistance has detection and braking limits. In particular, lifting the accelerator does not tell openpilot to stop.
